Alfa Romeo ALFASUD 4Dr Saloon Review

Alfa Romeo - Appearance.

The Alfasud was Alfa's first small front wheel drive car, launched at the Turin Motor show 1971 it soon received praise from road testers. Originally only available in a four door model however a Ti two door version was produced and launched a year later. The body of the Alfasud was designed with sheer Italian flair.

Alfa Romeo - On the Road.

The Alfasud was the first Alfa to be made with an engine smaller than 1200cc and the first to be produced with a boxer engine. The Alfasud had a 1186cc engine, disc brakes all around and a handbrake operating on the front callipers. It compromised McPherson strut front suspension and a dead axel at the rear rack and pinion steering the bodywork was designed by Giorgio Giugiaro. The two door Ti model brought out the following year included more power with up to 68Bhp and a five speed gear box. The external changes on the Ti model included redesigned round headlights, a black rubber rear spoiler And a different pressed steel wheel covering giving the Ti an altogether sportier style. In 1976 the Alfasud Sprint was introduced with a coupe body and a 1286cc engine with 75Bhp through a five speed gearbox, the next off the Alfa production line was the Super which arrived in 1977 and had a choice of 1200 and 1300 engines. 1982 was the final year of full production on the Alfasud we now saw a range of models from the original 1186cc through to the 1.5 Sprint Veloce, with four doors being replaced by a five door, never the less this car from the outset was praised by road testers for its superb handling.

Alfa Romeo - Inside the Alfasud.

The original Alfasud launched in 1971 had, as you would expect, basic interior however the concept of developing both inside and outside the vehicle did not go unnoticed when the second series was produced a year later with cloth inserts in the seats, a carpet and a revcounter all added to the Ti. Interior improved over the years with the development of the car.
